UW Oshkosh Students Enhance PR Experience and Spread Knowledge of Organ Donation

OSHKOSH, WI, March 6, 2022 – The UW Oshkosh Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter will be hosting a one-day campus event on Tuesday, Apr. 26 to raise awareness about the importance of registering as be a national organ donor.

The event will be held in Reeve Memorial Union, and the theme is “A Piece for Peace,” which was created from the idea that a piece of you can give someone else peace. In this case, the piece of you is an organ and someone’s peace is a new life of improved health. Students can visit the information table and write their reasons for becoming a donor on a puzzle piece. There will also be raffle prizes and treats for those who register to be a national organ donor.

Justine Eron is the President of UW Oshkosh PRSSA and has been part of the organization since her freshman year. She sees the importance of organ donation and wants to communicate that to the UW Oshkosh community with this campaign.

“We hope that with this theme, people make the connection that signing up to be a donor is much more than simply signing up. By donating, you are giving a piece of yourself to someone who needs it, and in return, you give them peace. The peace to live and continue their life,” Eron said. UW Oshkosh PRSSA is one of many national chapters participating in the annual National Organ Donation Awareness Competition (NODAC). The competition involves planning, executing and evaluating a full public relations campaign, and each chapter will submit a final binder to be judged. The top chapters will be recognized for their work, and the UW Oshkosh chapter has a reputation of placing high each year.

Anna Murphy-Pociask is the Vice President of Events on the UW Oshkosh PRSSA’s executive board. Her responsibilities involve planning the event from start to finish, and she sees the value of NODAC for both PRSSA members and the public.

"I feel that NODAC is a great way to get real-life campaign planning experience. [Chapter members] can get involved in so many ways such as event planning, social media content creation, media relations, and writing and editing experience. It looks great on a resume, and we have the chance to make a difference in many lives,” Murphy-Pociask said.

The Dr. Julie Henderson PRSSA Chapter at UW Oshkosh is one of over 340 chapters in the U.S., Columbia and Peru, and there are around 11,000 members worldwide. PRSSA is a pre- professional public relations organization that is affiliated with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which is the largest public relations association in the world. NODAC is an annual competition that invites PRSSA chapters to create campaigns to spread knowledge of organ donation across campuses nationwide, which raises awareness about registering to be a donor and also allows students to enhance their public relations skills.
